Xbox 360 LAN Party......

Post by wezbloke on 21/9/2011, 09:13

Hi all,

Myself and my buddy have been thinking of getting some xbox 360 LAN parties going in our area. Thing is, neither of us have ANY experience running a LAN party.

As far as I know we need 'Switches' or 'hubs' to connect the xbox's, setup one xbox as host, then away we go (obviously dont forget tv's etc!). I've been told switches are better?? I've been googling and have seen some 16 port switches for about £100ish. Is this good?? What's the best switch to use??

ANY advice, no matter how small, would be greatly appreciated on this. Like I said we are complete and utter noobs at this Embarassed

Thanks all Very Happy

Me and some mates used to have a good laugh with halo3 doing this. I think switches are mainly for high numbers of machine hook ups. We only had a 4 way xbox lan.
For this a 4way ethernet hub worked absolutely fine and only cost us a tenner offa ebay. Obviously you will need a tv for each box, all the cables, a copy of the game u playing for each box. plenty of power sockets. Lots of space, make sure it's well cooled(windows/doors etc open)as it will get pretty warm pretty quick with all that gear running and the smell of sweaty nuts will soon fill the space! Plenty of seating, lots of munchies and drinks and you're good to go.

Hey Wez

I have done a few LAN parties in the day. A switch is a better option as it manages the traffic better and gives you better throughput speed. Most switches should suffice as most of the games are optimised for online play these days. Anything from Netgear or 3Com etc will do.

So, you will need something like this:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Netgear-16-Port-Gigabit-Unmanaged-Switch/dp/tech-data/B0007SQEPK/ref=de_a_smtd
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Belkin-Snagless-Patch-Cable-Black/dp/B0001233EC/ref=sr_1_3?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1316596221&sr=1-3

That should give you a switch and cable.

How many people will be in the LAN? If less than 8, rather go for a hub or an 8 port switch, as they are much cheaper. Check that the can support system link, some dont. I know Halo does.

Then, get a proper fused power strip. You dont want a short to take out all the xbox's.

Also, try and even out the power to multiple plug points in the house. Specially if the plugs are on different trip switches. This will help stop a trip switch from getting overloaded.

Final tip, make sure you have enough beer and crisps! :)

Hope that helps!

A few weekends ago, had 2 mates over and we all had our xbox's online playing BFBC2. Made a huge difference in game play! A person dies and you know exactly where the enemy was and could take them out quickly!

That's awesome. Thanks guys! Very Happy

We pretty much have the venue sorted. I've got a HUGE room on the cheap in a pub I used to manage. Cheap booze, also pool and snooker tables if anyone needs a break from the screens!

I think we are gonna start off pretty small, 8-10 people. Then work our way up. We were thinking of having a different tournament each week/fortnight. Anyone taking part pays £5, winner and runner up take the lot. I wont win bugger all cos I suck Embarassed

If its not too far maybe some ARCers could join?? We are near Middlesbrough.

Mmm...might have to make a trip up there at some point! Love the idea of a LAN party in a pub!

If you are in it for the long haul, go for a switch, will last longer and give you more flexibility :)

I'll have a look and see what they have. Main reason we wanted to start this is because theres nothing like it in our area (that we know of). We will have to wait and see if theres enough interest to make it a regular thing.

Any ideas on advetising?? I was gonna put an advert in the Gazette at first, then maybe knock up some flyers.

Hubs are old school - buy a switch.

As Roto mentioned, a switch deals with traffic better than a hub.
